Video file size calculator

Estimate how big an exported video will be. Good for planning storage, upload time and delivery limits.

This is an estimate. It assumes a steady bitrate. Real files change with your editor, codec, variable bitrate and content, so expect the real size to be somewhat higher or lower.

These match YouTube’s published recommended upload bitrates for standard dynamic range video. They are a reference, not a rule. Resolution itself does not set file size: bitrate does.

How the estimate works

File size is bitrate multiplied by time. The calculator adds your video and audio bitrates, converts megabits to bytes and multiplies by the duration in seconds.

Size in megabytes ≈ (video Mbps + audio kbps ÷ 1000) × seconds ÷ 8

Example: 10 minutes at 8 Mbps video and 192 kbps audio is (8 + 0.192) × 600 ÷ 8 = about 614 MB. We use 1 GB = 1000 MB, the way storage makers and upload pages usually count.

What this tool does not know

  • It does not know how your editor encodes. Variable bitrate and “target vs. maximum” settings change results.
  • It ignores container overhead, subtitles and extra audio tracks. These are usually small.
  • It does not predict the size of archive codecs such as ProRes or DNxHR. Check your editor’s export panel, which often shows an estimated size.
